Egypt, then renamed the United Arab Republic (UAR), reimposes a blockade on the Strait of Tiran, cutting off Israeli ships from the Gulf of Aqaba.
Iraq and Israel go to war in the Six-Day War. Iraq closes its oil pipeline that supplies oil to the Western nations. It also severs diplomatic relations with the United States.
Anastasio Somoza becomes president. His rule is so corrupt that many young Nicaraguans in the poorer classes of society turn to join the rebel Sandinistas.
Israel launches a surprise air attack on the UAR, Jordan, Syria and Iraq. This is known as the Six-Day War. Israel takes the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsular from the UAR. Nasser responds by breaking diplomatic relations with the United States, whom he accuses of aiding Israel. He also closes the Suez Canal. Nasser also seeks more Soviet military aid.
Nicolae Ceausescu assumes the office of president of the state council, or head of state. He renames the country the Socialist Republic of Romania. Under Ceausescu, the press is censored and personal liberties are restricted.
